Chapter 2 – “What Brain Research Tells us About Learner Differences”
1.Learners are not reduced to simple categories such as “disabled” or “bright” They differ across the different brain networks showing stengths and weaknesses which makes every student unique.
Chapter 3 – “Why We Need Flexible Instructional Media”
1.Flexibility in media is key. It provides instruction that can reach more students more effectively. Using traditional materials in the classroom such as texts and speech do not fit everyone. As teachers we need to be flexible in our teaching styles and how material is presented to all different learning styles.
Chaper 4 – “What is Universal Design for Learning” -
1.It is a framework designed to represent information in multiple formats and media, and to provide multiple pathways for students expression and ways to engage students’ interest and motivation. It helps teachers differentiate their instruction through goals.
Chapter 5 approaches goals – using UDL to set clear goals
1.The UDL framework provides a structure for appropriate goals for individual students. Goals help students understand the true purpose of their efforts but they need goals that work for them. Using flexible tools and media will accommodate diverse learners and provide clearer learning goals for teachers and students.
Chapter 6 – materials and methods for reaching goals
1.As teachers we need to make teaching methods and curriculum materials flexible in specific ways. Using flexible methods and materials and the UDL framework, teachers can help students reach their goals. The future seems to reveal more digital core curriculum materials offering a great variety of options to students.
Chapter 7 – focuses on assessment
1.Giving the same written test to all students is not accurate. Using digital tools and media make it possible to design ongoing assessments that will ultimately support individual differences. This is a much more accurate way to measure the students achievement and methods to reaching their goals than using written tests.
Chapter 8 – “Making Universal Design for Learning a Reality.”
1. To make this design a reality it’s going to need support from the world of education. Parents, students, teachers, and administrators will affect the change in the classroom, teaching methods, homework, and curriculum used. It also involves those part of our educational policies and professional development methods, and participation of professional organizations. With these two parts working together the UDL method will become a reality in schools worldwide. This is just the begining to a new teaching style and this is definately a major change that our society will go through.
