Task #5

Filed under: Uncategorized — jack2477 at 9:47 pm on Thursday, October 18, 2007

I learned a lot from task #5. In today’s society we don’t seem to care too much about copyrights and what they mean. It just seems like we can use whatever material we find and make it our own. What then is left to be created or discovered-nothing! No one receives the credit they deserve anymore. Copyright is part of respecting other’s material and I’m afraid that the word respect today is dwindling.

I liked the citation machine! That is a neat way to organize data and reference material to form a bibliography-giving credit where credit is due. I think it’s hard work for people to create a proper bibliography that they don’t care to use one or they think that it takes too much time. These are the same type of individuals who are not respecting the authors and just copying what they find.

The video on U-tube was awesome. I love all of those cartoons and it really was informative at the same time. It drove the point across for me.

What I have learned about copyright

*I have learned that it is so important to properly use copyright information and to become an example of this especially for my students.

* Copyrighting has grown from text and documents to plays and movies and video in this modern aged world. It started way back in the 1600′s when acts and laws were being decreed and these laws were to become scared not imitated. Present day it is still in effect but not as enforced as it was before. This is why it is so important to educate our students on the correct usage.

* If copyrights are not used properly, a copyright holder is granted redress. The persons or persons involved may be persecuted and held accountable for their actions. It is a criminal act and there are laws protecting copyrights.

*  A copyright lasts for the life of the creator plus another seventy years for today. However, most of the material was published before the year 1923, and it is not protected by a copyright any longer.

* To obtain certain copyrights, the user must obtain special permission or a license to use the information . Teachers can request permission to use certain material in the classroom, but if copies are made there are limitations on them. Year to year, teachers must obtain permission to copy or use certain materials.

*Basically anything that someone has created other than a straight fact will obtain a copyright because it is theirs, they created it. If someone were to use their material or copy it in any way that is copyright infringement and is illegal without consent and giving credit to the author-such as citing the source.

* A notice of a copyright is not required! We should all just assume that something that is not our own and is not a factual piece belongs to someone else and is protected by a copyright whether it is indicatted or not.

* As educators we need to be careful. Just because we are a school doesn’t mean that the rules of copyright material don’t apply to us, they do. We need to be an example to others as well as the students to use them properly.

* students should practice looking up different referenced material on different things such as videos, internet, books, etc. They should also practice citing it and be aware of how to document their findings.

* Fines of up to $250,000 can occur if copyright material is used improperly such as computer software. It is a very serious matter.

What I wonder about copyright

*I wonder what information is necessary when I am trying to teach my students about copyright.

*I wonder what my students should know and how they should properly go about using it.

*I wonder how copyright started and how it has changed from how it started to present day.

*I wonder what happens to someone that does not use copyright information properly.

*I wonder how something obtains a copyright.

*I wonder what can obtain a copyright?

What I know about Copyright

I know that copyrighting is used to reserve the rights of one’s personal creations and original work. When we use other’s work we should indicate that we have by referencing the owners material. I know that if you use someone’s work or copy someone’s work and it is not noted it is referred to as plagiarism. I know that a copyright should be used when an original piece is finished to seal the work and mark it their own. I know that as a teacher it is important that we teach students how to correctly use others information and how to preserve their own.

Chapter 2 – “What Brain Research Tells us About Learner Differences”

1.Learners are not reduced to simple categories such as “disabled” or “bright” They differ across the different brain networks showing stengths and weaknesses which makes every student unique.

Chapter 3 – “Why We Need Flexible Instructional Media”

1.Flexibility in media is key. It provides instruction that can reach more students more effectively. Using traditional materials in the classroom such as texts and speech do not fit everyone. As teachers we need to be flexible in our teaching styles and how material is presented to all different learning styles.

Chaper 4 – “What is Universal Design for Learning” -

1.It is a framework designed to represent information in multiple formats and media, and to provide multiple pathways for students expression and ways to engage students’ interest and motivation. It helps teachers differentiate their instruction through goals.

Chapter 5 approaches goals – using UDL to set clear goals

1.The UDL framework provides a structure for appropriate goals for individual students. Goals help students understand the true purpose of their efforts but they need goals that work for them. Using flexible tools and media will accommodate diverse learners and provide clearer learning goals for teachers and students.

Chapter 6 – materials and methods for reaching goals

1.As teachers we need to make teaching methods and curriculum materials flexible in specific ways. Using flexible methods and materials and the UDL framework, teachers can help students reach their goals. The future seems to reveal more digital core curriculum materials offering a great variety of options to students.

Chapter 7  – focuses on assessment

1.Giving the same written test to all students is not accurate. Using digital tools and media make it possible to design ongoing assessments that will ultimately support individual differences. This is a much more accurate way to measure the students achievement and methods to reaching their goals than using written tests.

Chapter 8 – “Making Universal Design for Learning a Reality.”

1. To make this design a reality it’s going to need support from the world of education. Parents, students, teachers, and administrators will affect the change in the classroom, teaching methods, homework, and curriculum used. It also involves those part of our educational policies and professional development methods, and participation of professional organizations. With these two parts working together the UDL method will become a reality in schools worldwide. This is just the begining to a new teaching style and this is definately a major change that our society will go through.
